Sexe, Meurtres et Cappuccino

Okay, I have some serious deadlines hanging over my head but I have to share this. Guess who’s going to France!

If you guessed me you’re wrong, but close. You see, as of July 1st the French will be introduced to Sophie Katz!!!

I just love it when my books get translated. It makes me feel so worldly. But also it’s just an incredible honor. Here I am typing up my imaginings in my bedroom and halfway across the world there are people who I have never met, who I probably never WILL meet reading my work. How can I not be flattered and humbled by that?

And then in this country things are going pretty darned well too! There were over 50 people at my Capitola Book Café event and it was such a wonderful and diverse audience. Men and women, some in their 20s others in their 70s and 80s--it was just a fantastic mix. I knew about ten of the people in the crowd (friends and family) and about 30% of the audience had read Sex, Murder And A Double Latte but the rest were there to meet me and Sophie for the first time. They were very responsive and lively group and I had a wonderful time.

Halfway through my reading I my eyes fell on a woman sitting in one of the middle rows. Her eyes were closed and her chin was slowly inching closer to her chest. She was petite, probably in her 70s and had a head full of brown curly hair. I didn’t hold her fatigue against her. After all, which one of us hasn't fallen asleep at an inopportune time. Yet just as I was about to wrap the whole thing up and start signing books she raised her hand. “I have a question,” she said in a clear and surprisingly alert tone.

“Yes?” I asked. I had to admire her courage, if I had inadvertently fallen asleep during a speaker’s presentation I wouldn’t have the nerve to ask anything.

“With all your writing, traveling and parenting do you make time for love affairs?”

I am famous for my ability to volley back any off the wall question that is thrown at me during Q&As but this woman, who apparently hadn’t been sleeping AT ALL, had totally thrown me for a loop. I actually stumbled for an answer, finally agreeing that I should make time for such things, if only in the name of research.

Anyway, I don’t know who the woman was but I like her. Anyone who can get the better of me deserves my respect.
