Bits Of Wisdom From My 8-Year-Old

My son turned 8 last month and apparently it is a very wise age. Here are a few bits of wisdom he has shared with me since his June Birthday:

About a month ago, while at the mall he stopped in front of a Disney Store to examine their Pirates Of The Caribbean Merchandising display. He seemed pleased with it until his eyes landed on a pink t-shirt featuring a picture of Johnny Depp. “That’s just wrong,” my son said. “Pirates are NOT supposed to be PINK! He’s Captain Jack Sparrow! Not Hello Kitty!”

Truer words have never been spoken.

Then, on a more serious note, my son asked me about our President and why he’s so cocky (in my defense he picked that one up from his grandparents). Anyhoo, I told him that the problem, as far as I was concerned, lay with our President’s apparent conviction that he was appointed to his position by God and that this gives him some kind of Pope like authority (although most Popes are a little more articulate). My son giggled and asked, “Are you saying that he thinks God put him in office? Not the people?”

“Not exactly,” I said, “it’s more like he thinks God made the people elect him.”

When he heard this my little guy became very pensive. After a moment’s thought he said, “No. God lets us choose our own fate. He just shows us the options. The problem is that what we really want isn’t always on the menu.”

It took me a few minutes to pick myself off the floor after that comeback and while he said this over a week ago I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that conversation. In my own mind I’ve expanded his loose analogy and applied it to the changes I’m making in my own life. Tomorrow night I’ll write a little more about that but right now I’m going to go to bed. God does allow us to choose our fate and tonight I believe I’m fated to begin a rare but much needed 8 hours stretch of uninterrupted sleep.

Kyra,

I love you! I love your son. Our boys are fated to meet at some point. They'd dig each other. I'm in Phoenix now, a little closer. We should try to escape some weekend with the boys and see what happens...

Hey Girl! I commented on your myspace but if you are like me, you probably don't go there very often. PLUS you've been so busy! I plugged your new book on my blog. I hope you don't mind my comparing Sophie to Nancy Drew. It's just that she was the last sleuth that had a piece of my heart and now Sophie has taken her place as a more grown up sophisticated version!

I read about your considering moving. Funny karma in the air. Alisa moved to Phoenix and I’m thinking about moving out of Houston for the first time in my 37 years of life. I allude to it on my blog but I don’t want to say anything about it just in case my new boss reads my blog. And since he used to be my co-worker and now he’s my boss, there’s a very good chance he will…
