I'm baaack!

Several of you have let me know your feelings about Myspace (I try to keep swearing to a minimum on this blog so I won't print you're comments). Anyhoo, the message came through loud and clear and going forward I'll be blogging here as well as on Myspace so you'll have a choice.

Anyhoo, I figured I'd reacquaint myself with this site by telling you about an odd encounter I had on Saturday night---

I was at a friend’s birthday party and I met this guy (he’s gay, so don’t get any ideas) who happened to be Jewish. Like me, he’s Jewish on his mother’s side but while my father was Black his father is Mexican. He started to talk to me about how people always think he’s Israeli or something and I told him how my nationality also tends to confuse people. He then admitted that his mother’s side of the family is from Eastern Europe and moved to the US at the turn of the twentieth century to escape the pogroms---just like my mother’s family. But that’s not exactly uncommon so I didn't think much about it.

Until he told me that his family, once in America, immigrated to Nebraska.

So here’s a well kept secret---that’s exactly where my family’s American adventure started off too. I don’t tell people this because they look at me funny. Jews are supposed to live in New York, Chicago, LA and so on. But Omaha? It just screws with people’s dearly held stereotypes and far be it for me to do that.

But then it gets weirder: his family moved to LA in the 1930s---like mine. And once they moved to LA they moved into a place on a street called Fairfax---like mine. Then his mother bucked tradition and procreated with a Mexican rather than a Jew (my mother went for the Black Buddhist). Now this guy, who humorously calls himself the Gay-Jewish-Mexican, lives in the Bay Area---like me.

So what do you think? Should we do a DNA test? Dollars to doughnuts we’re related.
