Sophie was born and raised in San Francisco.
She was raised by her parents, Hanna and Joseph
Katz. Joseph Katz was African American and
converted to Judaism for her mother-even going
so far as to change his last name to reflect
his new religious identity. Sophie's younger
sister, Leah, was born two years after Sophie.
While Sophie loves her sister dearly the only
thing they seem to have in common is DNA.
Sophie never showed an interest in the road
more traveled. She rejected her father's practical
suggestion that she pursue a law degree and
instead got her Bachelors degree in English
at University of San Francisco. Sophie's father
